Practicing Sabbath as a College Student

I have been thinking today about the Sabbath, and what it means to keep the Sabbath, especially when deadlines definitely do not stop for Sundays.

This weekend I took time to completely disconnect from my life at Rice, and I felt like that was an absolutely necessary thing to do for myself and my mental health. Even to not be on campus was wonderfully cathartic. I still did work today; I studied and worked on internship things, but I also wasn’t so pressed to get things done. I stopped and rested when I wanted to, I watched a few episodes of Seinfeld, and I read my bible.

I had dinner with my friend Magen, who keeps her own Sabbath by not doing school work on Sundays, and we talked about what it looks like and what it means to keep a Sabbath day while at school. I think this is definitely something I will need to think over and pray about, but I could see this being a really healthy element for my life and for my relationship with God.
